Plein Air Paintings by Jock MacRae, Artist Reception
We are thrilled to join Oak & Oil, a new gallery in Katonah, for an exhibit of the work of our instructor Jock MacRae. Jocks' works have been collected worldwide, as well as at auction through Sotheby's. Please stop by both locations to view Mr. MacRae's work between March 28th - April 18th.
Jock MacRae, Painter
Mr. MacRae has painted on location throughout the US, Mexico and Canada, British Columbia in particular. His love of nature and extensive knowledge of plants and trees is at the heart of his work. The watercolors on view are all Plein Air, the larger oils were done either Plein Air or in studio from the Plein Air pieces. These works cover a span of over 25 years.
A peer of Nell Blaine, Emily Mason, Wolf Kahn and Henry Finkelstein, Mr. MacRae’s paintings are a response to nature. He views painting as a means of self-expression, which he feels is especially important in this age of photographic reproduction.
Mr. MacRae comes from a family of painters. His great-great-grandfather, Francis William Edmunds' work is in major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. MacRae has passed down his love of art to his stepson, stepdaughter, son and daughter Heather MacRae-Trulson (who is also the co-owner of the Non-Fiction Gallery in Savannah, Georgia).
Mr. MacRae has taught at the Katonah Art Center since its inception 18 years ago and is currently among KAC's most popular fine art instructors.

What is Abstract Art?
Very few people truly understand what the term “abstract art” actually means, even among art professionals. It’s not the same as “non-representational art.” This program will focus on both abstract and non-representational works, with the goal of enlightening attendees on both approaches. We’ll also have a look at just how far back abstraction and non-representation go—in the history of art!
The art of our Exhibiting Artist, Karin Batten, will be examined in this presentation--along with many other great masterworks.
Don't miss this exciting FREE program--delivered by teaching artist and art historian, Dr. Jill Kiefer!
Come see the exhibition at Anderson Chase Gallery.

Masako Inkyo: Utsuroi Transitions The opening will take place on Saturday, April 16th from 3:00-6:00 PM.
Ms. Inkyo will offer a Shodo demonstration at 3:45pm.

After continuing her practice throughout middle school, high school and college, she received her Master’s degree in Japanese Literature/Calligraphy at Yasuda University. Ms. Inkyo is a member of the three largest Shodo professional associations in Japan. In all three she holds the highest rank, based on work she has submitted. She has also received many awards, including first prizes in both Shodo and pen calligraphy in national competitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Currently, she teaches Shodo at the Japan Society and the Keio Academy of New York while also undertaking various design commissions.
In March 2015, Ms. Inkyo gave a workshop and demonstration, themed “The Tale of Genji” at Middlebury College in Vermont to celebrate their acquisition of an authentic and historical Japanese folding screen (byōbu). Also in 2015, the Harrison Public Library completely renovated their building and placed a piece of Masako Inkyo’s art on permanent display in the newly refurbished premises. Most recently, Masako made several Shodo designs for the newly opened Morimoto Asia Restaurant at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Instructor Tracy Burtz opens at Anderson Chase Gallery
This show will take place October 15th - November 12th at the newly renovated location for the Anderson Chase Gallery located inside of the Katonah Art Center.
Tracy Burtz’s 15-year retrospective show, opening on October 15 is entitled “Eye Candy” for several reasons. Burtz is known primarily for her oil paintings, many nearly life-size, of women of exotic, arresting beauty. They do not confront; they entice. The viewer is drawn in, wondering: what they are thinking, what they are feeling? The explanation goes beyond figuration, to the masterful handling of composition, color, light, volume and space.
The drawings of beach scenes, which are more abstract, pop with bright pastels; the still lifes are more subtle; charcoal drawings of women have no color at all. Yet all make the eye hungry for more.
Ms Burtz lives and works in Pleasantville, NY. She received her BFA from Boston University School for the Arts and her MFA from CUNY Queens College. She has exhibited in New York City, Taos, Nantucket, Southhampton, and Paris, France, among other places, and has ten one-woman shows under her beaded belt. Her work has been featured on the NBC show SMASH and is included in the permanent collection of New York University.
Burtz has taught painting and drawing at all levels from children to graduate students; she has been teaching at the Katonah Art Center since 2011.
